Culture in Itacaré: The Essential Selection

Amidst the increasingly mainstream tourist culture developing here, the odds are against the survival of activities involving local cultural heritage. But step away from the expected and you’ll discover a truly rewarding experience.

We are very lucky to have some wonderful organisations and enterprises working with young people in extremely positive cultural and sporting activities. Positive awareness and education contributes to a more sustainable model of tourism, with a healthier relationship between local people and visitors than traditional models of mass tourism.

Here are some of the organisations contributing to the health of the town. Who knows, they could also improve your long-term health as a visitor!:

Casa do Boneco Association for Education, Art and Popular Culture in Itacaré

Founded in 1987, the Casa do Boneco is dedicated to reinstating and preserving afro-indegenous culture, linking it with community sustainability. You can give support and learn more about afro-indegenous traditions and the story of this outstanding Association by attending a workshop or show.

They have a large space for training and rodas – in the centre of town, just off the “Pituba” – and visitors are always welcome.
